It didn’t take much imagination to envision the amount of food they’d need to fill giant stomachs when their helpers returned, so Captain Baldric sent his men to hunt.

“We’ll go get firewood,” Hannah volunteered.

Andy sat down under a copse of trees, alone with his thoughts. What exactly happened when the trolls’ curse broke? We walked into the cave, Methuselah went nuts and dragged me to the stream, and then the sapphire and ruby got so hot they burned my back. Air, water, fire, earth, ruby, sapphire—Bridrika thought that combination could break a curse. Looks like she was right. But will it be enough to take out Abaddon? Andy ran a hand through his hair and exhaled loudly.

More pondering confused him: I had the sapphire and ruby before I finished collecting the ingredients. Why wasn’t I just told to use those to break the curse? Wouldn’t they have worked? Andy shook his head. What am I missing?

Andy allowed his thoughts to flow freely until one idea, more disturbing than any other, interrupted his rumination and made him gasp. Do we have to destroy the very source of Abaddon’s power? His stomach clenched. The source would have to be huge…and a lot more powerful than him! Fear filled him at the core.

“We should have enough.” Hannah motioned to a hulking pile of brush and logs as she, Alden, and the stewards dusted themselves off.

Andy jumped. He’d been so lost in thought he hadn’t heard them approach.

“What were you thinking about?” Hannah asked.

“Oh! Nothing.” We just need two more pendants to defeat Abaddon. I hope. That’s what we need to focus on. Andy buried his contemplations, unwilling to explore the possibility that terrified him.

Judging from Hannah’s furrowed brow, Andy knew she didn’t buy his response. So before she had a chance to probe more deeply, he suggested, “Tristan, Favian, and Doran need to work on their sword-fighting skills. We’ve got some time.”

The three of them paired up with the stewards and Andy nodded for Alden to lead. It had been a long time since Andy had done the basic drills, but his body remembered—attack, block, pivot, duck, attack, block, pivot, duck. He and Doran did a slow dance around the blazing fire. They traded partners and he repeated the movements with Tristan and then Favian. Sweat flowed from his brow both from the heat as well as the workout. And he soon found his mind wandering. I wonder how the regents are doing back home.

“No, Andy! Don’t even think it!” MiniMe protested.

Don’t worry. I won’t. Trust me.

“Thank you!” MiniMe exhaled dramatically.

The officers, having returned from a prosperous hunt, set to work skinning their kills.

“Well, at least we won’t have to worry about trolls finding us tonight,” Andy joked to Alden awhile later.

“Heads up!” Fulk whispered loudly, bounding into the clearing. “Zolt are coming!”

Everyone scurried under cover, and six winged shadows soon swooped low over the clearing. No one in the company twitched or made a sound as the enemy hovered for a full minute before finally moving on.
